Filing Delays Does Not Mean You Have to Wait. With recent changes to the tax code, the IRS estimated they won’t be ready for prime time till mid to late February which has already passed.

Check your mail! The IRS will send you the occasional letter. Make sure you open all letters from them! If it happens to be unpleasant news (such as an audit letter), the location of your audit is a good indicator of how severe that audit could be. According to Reuters news service, the Obama Administration’s proposed 2012 budget includes a $1.13 billion increase in funding for the IRS. About $460 million of the increase, which brings the total IRS budget to a whopping $13.3 billion, is slated for tax enforcement programs. The increase allows the IRS to hire 5,100 new employees, most of whom will go after delinquent taxpayers both large and small.
