This week, BusinessWeek reported that AstraZeneca, a U.K. pharmaceutical giant, agreed to settle a U.S. tax dispute and as a result raised its profit target for this year. If you owe the IRS a large amount of money and can’t afford to pay the lump sum at once, don’t panic. Consider an Installment Agreement, which is a payment plan used to break up payment on a monthly basis. This is a common route taken by qualifying consumers to settle their back taxes.

According to Reuters news service, the Obama Administration’s proposed 2012 budget includes a $1.13 billion increase in funding for the IRS. About $460 million of the increase, which brings the total IRS budget to a whopping $13.3 billion, is slated for tax enforcement programs. The increase allows the IRS to hire 5,100 new employees, most of whom will go after delinquent taxpayers both large and small.
