A former chief of staff to a member of the Newark (N.J.) Municipal Council received six months in prison and six months of home confinement for evading income taxes.
Richard Allen Whitten, 50, of Newark, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion for his fraudulent W-4 form and subsequent failure to file a federal tax return. Whitten claimed phony exemptions and failed to file an individual income tax return.

A Tennessee husband and wife face prison time after pleading guilty to two counts of willful failure to file tax returns.

A New Jersey criminal defense attorney who has not filed a personal income tax return since 2000 admitted to committing tax crimes in connection with income he received from his law practice.

Arlan R. Turley, 60, of Gilbert, Arizona, was indicted on two counts of willful failure to file a tax return and 20 counts of willful failure to pay over taxes. Turley, a licensed dentist in Arizona, operated the East Valley Dental Service in Mesa, Ariz.

Thomas E. Cowan Jr., 64, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of income tax evasion and three counts of failure to file income tax returns.

Architect Jeffrey Alan Carrithers, of Portland, Ore., pleaded guilty to one count of income tax evasion for the year 2000.
According to the plea, Carrithers received substantial taxable income in 2000 and owed a substantial amount of tax. He willfully attempted to evade taxes, however, by concealing his true taxable income from the IRS and by failing to pay the tax due and owing.
