With just two short weeks before Tax Day 2011, I sat down once again last week with Russ & Sully of the Big Biz Show to talk about some top tax help tips for 2010 returns.

Today’s Tax Resolution Tip:
If you owe the IRS a large amount of money and can’t afford to pay the lump sum at once, don’t panic. Consider an Installment Agreement, which is a payment plan used to break up payment on a monthly basis. This is a common route taken by qualifying consumers to settle their back taxes.

Today’s Tax Resolution Tip:
Check your mail! The IRS will send you the occasional letter. Make sure you open all letters from them! If it happens to be unpleasant news (such as an audit letter), the location of your audit is a good indicator of how severe that audit could be. I recently came across an interesting article on CNN with some surprising stats. In Tax cheats: Single, young and male, an annual survey conducted by DDB Worldwide Communications Group found that the typical American tax cheat is male, single and under the age of 45. According to the survey:
15% of Americans surveyed fessed up to fudging their tax returns
64% of those people were men, according to the survey of consumer attitudes and behavior.

According to Reuters news service, the Obama Administration’s proposed 2012 budget includes a $1.13 billion increase in funding for the IRS. About $460 million of the increase, which brings the total IRS budget to a whopping $13.3 billion, is slated for tax enforcement programs. The increase allows the IRS to hire 5,100 new employees, most of whom will go after delinquent taxpayers both large and small.
