Just last week, the IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) released its Annual Report for 2012 showing strong increases in enforcement actions and IRS penalties imposed on convicted tax criminals for the year ending Sept. 30, 2012. According to the IRS bulletin announcing the report’s release, the criminal investigation division investigates potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code and related financial crimes in a manner to foster confidence in the

I recently wrote a post for the Tax Matters blog about a newly released Government Accountability Office (GAO) report showing IRS budget cuts forcing the furlough of 100,000 employees therefore reducing the ability to audit taxpayers at the same rate. A Huffington Post article titled: “Offshore Tax Havens: Sequestration Damages IRS Battle with Tax Evasion“ provides additional GAO report information shining a light on how the sequester/IRS budget cuts will

Sometimes clients describe their tax situation as “Tax Armageddon.” That’s how our client Mike felt when he first came to Tax Resolution Services, Co. facing huge tax debt issues. While it may “feel” like Armageddon, it really isn’t because there is a solution to every problem even Mike’s. Here’s his story:
“I went through a divorce several years ago and found myself strapped for cash because all of a sudden there

This week’s tax topics ranged from tax evasion cases to getting tax relief with the IRS Offer in Compromise Program. Here are highlights from the ones covered on the Tax Resolution University Blog:
Tax Evasion
Nancy Armienti, 59, of Elmer, New Jersey, admitted to evading federal income taxes in 2008 on nearly $700,000 in income she took from her former employee of Atlantic County Concrete and Material Company. Armienti created false

Client Mike’s case is a good example of when bad things happen to good people. Before he contacted Tax Resolution Services, Co., (TRS), Mike’s financial troubles included a massive tax bill assessed at over $100 thousand dollars. In a recent episode of the national network television show, TaxMan, I interviewed Mike several years after he first came to TRS for help with his IRS issues. Mike is a nice, honest

As previously mentioned, I will continue posting client success stories and testimonials to inspire taxpayers with IRS tax problems to take the first steps to get the income tax relief they need. Waiting only makes matters worse.
Good people can have bad circumstances happened to them, often through no fault of their own. When those troubles involve tax debt, their biggest obstacle becomes financial: they have no money to pay their enormous

On February 3, 2013, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution authorizing the federal income tax turned 100. The 16th Amendment has certainly had its share of controversy, especially in its early years. A Forbes article titled, “Guess Who Turned 100 This Weekend?“ highlights the history and tumultuous beginning of our tax system. Here are some of the interesting facts Forbes presents:
The Federal Income Tax is Born
On February 3, 1913, Delaware became

Straight out of a soap opera script, the IRS appears to be facing its own public relations nightmare in the form of a sex scandal. A Huffington Post article titled “Vincent Burroughs Accuses IRS Agent Dora Abrahamson of Coercing Sex by Using Threat of Tax Penalty“ reveals the details of a salacious and inappropriate meeting between IRS agent and taxpayer under audit.
It appears agent Dora Abrahamson initially contacted Vincent Burroughs,

I came across this article recently by Forbes contributor Stephen J. Dunn titled “Representation before IRS“ that started with the line “in tax controversies, who represents you can be the ballgame.” I couldn’t agree more. Dunn goes on to define tax controversy as a “contested matter [to go] before the IRS, civil or criminal, administrative or judicial.” He also strongly recommends that tax controversies not be handled by inexperienced CPA’s, Enrolled

I came across a great IRS article this week posted on NASDAQ.com in which a former CPA and current tax attorney shares the lessons he learns when he received notification of an audit of his 2009 personal income taxes.
You see, even us tax professionals are subject to IRS audits just like anyone else. You would probably assume a tax attorney would not be intimidated by an IRS audit, but in

Rev. Al Sharpton is facing financial woes again, as the FEC has determined that his 2004 campaign owes $486,803 to the U.S. Treasury for illegal donations and other financial improprieties.
According to reports, while Sharpton was campaigning for president, he collected “love offerings” from churches, a practice common for traveling preachers. His campaign finances also came under scrutiny as he paid for much of it with his personal American Express card,
