I’m excited to announce that in its effort to protect consumers and eliminate deceptive business practices, the Tax Problem Resolution Services Coalition (TPRSC) has crafted proposed legislation titled the “Delinquent Tax Debt Representation and Service Act“.
In case you didn’t know, the TPRSC is comprised of leading providers of tax resolution services, including enrolled agents, tax lawyers, CPAs and tax resolution firms. As part of its mandate, the TPRSC has identified

Did your spouse, or ex-spouse, evade taxes without your knowledge? If, all of sudden, you find yourself entangled in a tax evasion case with the IRS due to your spouse’s irresponsible decisions and/or actions, and you are innocent, you may be able to secure tax relief for yourself under the IRS’s Innocent Spouse program. The tax case below (although we are not sure if the spouse was innocent or not)

A tax lien is serious business! If you find yourself with a tax lien from the IRS, you can’t ignore it. Tax liens can make it difficult, or impossible, for you to obtain financing on a car or a home, and can tie up your personal property and real estate. To top it off, tax liens are public record and when one is filed against a consumer, anyone can find

The good old days of “safe tax havens” are over.
We saw this last year with the bust of UBS and the thousands of taxpayers who owed unpaid back taxes hidden in Swiss bank accounts. They all paid their dues–in the form of heavy IRS penalties.
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, titled “Sacre-Bleu! The Foreign Account Penalty“, taxpayers are warned against non-compliance with FBAR restrictions. According to the article, “FBAR

Tax Day has come and gone. Now what do you do with all those files of documents you used to prepare your return? Payroll information, business expenses, and various other documents take up vast amounts of space in the typical small business file cabinet. Do we really need to keep it all? And for how long?
I was recently interviewed by Christopher Null, who explored these questions on Intuit’s Small Business

Don’t let Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Doug Shulman hear you use the “audit lottery” phrase. That’s right: you may have heard it at a dinner party or chatting with co-workers. There’s an ongoing myth that the IRS approaches who they audit much like how anyone wins a lottery. By luck. And they’re all wrong–an IRS audit is not random at all. In fact, it follows a system.
In a speech at

I blog about tax evasion cases almost daily on my tax blog! Why, you may ask? Because I am trying to highlight that no matter how rich, or how poor, how famous, or non-famous, someone is does not matter to the IRS. The IRS wants their taxes and they will come after you, if not today, than some time in the future. Who wants to live constantly looking over their

Failure to file tax returns can be construed as a criminal act. In the case presented below, this Pennsylvania willfully failed to file any tax returns and, no doubt, will be punished like the true criminal that he is.
David M. Mengden, of Chadds Ford, Penn., has been charged in a nine-count indictment with tax evasion, obstruction of justice, failing to file tax returns and bank fraud.
The indictment alleges that Mengden engaged

Now that the tax deadline is over, if you are facing audits or are behind in paying back taxes or even if you’re filing late returns, you may want to take your medicine and reach out to the IRS. This can be done either in person or on the telephone.
But before you pick up the phone, know this: negotiating with the government agency without expert representation can be tricky at

Do you think that only celebrities get targeted for tax evasion? Not true! The IRS will come after you – famous or not – if you are cheating on your taxes, especially if you are making millions. A Colorado loan preparer has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, admitting

While the government is working to cut down federal spending, it’s also chomping at anything it can to get more revenue. The IRS is coming down hard on offshore account holders who are hiding assets in order to avoid tax liability.
This year, the IRS is offering for the second (and they claim the last) time, the voluntary disclosure program. In 2009, the IRS amnesty program was a huge success, bringing
