Plane Strikes IRS Building in Texas

The IRS is working with federal and state law enforcement agencies to determine why an individual apparently deliberately crashed a small plane into an IRS building in Austin, Tex., on February 18. IRS Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman said he was shocked by the tragic events. “This appears to be an isolated incident,” Shulman said in a written statement.

Late in the morning on February 18, the individual, who media reports have identified as Joseph Andrew Stack, flew a single-engine plane into an IRS building in Austin. The building was engulfed in flames after the crash, according to local media reports. A spokesperson for the Austin Police Department said the investigation is “fluid and ongoing.” There are reports that the individual was disgruntled with the IRS.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the dedicated employees of the IRS who work in the Austin building. We will immediately begin doing whatever we can to help them during this difficult time,” Shulman said.

According to the IRS, approximately 190 employees worked in the building. The location hit by the plane is not the Service’s large processing facility in Austin.
