I recently mentioned the new effort by the IRS to help consumers with delinquent back taxes avoid tax liens and become compliant in these economically challenging times.
While these tax relief efforts from the IRS would seem to be welcome news, we tax resolution experts have little hope that these changes will result in much of a break for the consumers who need it most.
Here’s why: from my experience, I have

Recently the IRS announced its new efforts to help struggling consumers by making changes to the lien process that are meant to give people “a break.”
But what does that really mean? Are consumers really going to have an easier time financially now that the IRS adjusted their lien process? You may be asking yourself: wait, aren’t the IRS supposed to be going after my money and not helping me? Is

The IRS is giving foreign account holders another chance to get back into the system with their Limited Amnesty disclosure program to expire in August 2011.
Last time the IRS offered this amnesty program in 2009, some 15,000 consumers with undisclosed offshore accounts fessed up, paying the IRS a collective $400 million in revenue. Hoping for a repeat, the IRS is offering the limited amnesty program again this year to give

As more IRS-burdened consumers are seeking relief from their tax troubles during a record year of federal spending on tax enforcement, Rush Limbaugh has endorsed Tax Resolution Services, Co. as a provider of solutions for taxpayers with IRS problems.
“If you owe $20,000 or more in back taxes, are under audit or have unfiled returns they can help,” said Limbaugh, one of America’s leading talk show hosts. “Tax Resolution Services will

The year 2010 was a banner one for the enforcement wing of the IRS. As reported by the Associated Press and other news organizations, the IRS increased the number of returns it audited by nearly 11 percent last year—some 1.58 million individual returns, compared to 1.43 million the year before.
Steve Miller, IRS deputy commissioner for services and enforcement states in the AP report, “We saw individual audits increase, reaching the

I came across a recent Wall Street Journal article on why paying for a tax professional for tax prep is a good idea. According to the article, many small business owners are cutting costs by doing tax returns themselves. However, the downfall comes in the enormous amount of time spent on these tax forms due to a general lack of understanding of the complex tax code–which could result in overpaying

Earlier this week, I kicked off the Tax Resolution Tax Day Countdown with Russ and Sully on the Big Biz Show by talking about celebrity tax woes and what we can learn from them.
Unlike what the tabloids may suggest, celebrities don’t get better or worse treatment from the IRS than regular Joe Six-Packs. But what IS different is that the IRS leverages the celebrity of the name as a deterrent

Wake up consumers, it’s now February! That means you’ve got less than 70 days till THE tax day–you ready? While this year the tax deadline is April 18th instead of the usual 15th (Emancipation holiday in Washington D.C), that doesn’t mean you really have “more time” to get your ducks in a row.
This is why I am happy to return to the Big Biz Show this year with the Tax

If you have failed to file your taxes, you may be charged with a misdemeanor or potentially a felony and it is punishable by a hefty fine and, sometimes, prison time. What most people do not realize is that you have a right to file delinquent tax returns, no matter how late they are. Instead of fretting that the IRS is going to come after you, get your tax paperwork

This is a good, logical question that many taxpayers have, understandably, asked before. The answer is a definitive ‘no’.
The IRS have had a considerable boost in their enforcement budget, allowing them to pursue all tax delinquencies, both personal and business finances. In many circumstances, the IRS is willing to accept less than the total amount owed by taxpayers, in order to bring them back into compliance. Usually these agreements are made with the help

As a business owner, there are two types of workers you will deal with: employees and independent contractors. When it comes to tax and the IRS, the difference between the two is crucial.
For each employee, it is the business owner’s responsibility to withhold and pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, income taxes and pay unemployment taxes on wages paid. However, when employing an independent contractor, as a general rule, the

Need more proof that the IRS is unrelenting when it comes to collecting unpaid back taxes? A recent article by the Associated Press reveals that “the IRS filed nearly 1.1 million liens in the budget year that ended in September, a 14 percent jump over the previous year.”
For those who are unfamiliar with tax liens, they are essentially punishments for taxpayers who have fallen behind on their taxes for years.
