The Internal Revenue Service announced this week they received 12,000 new applications from the 2011 Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Initiative (OVDI) that closed on September 9, 2011. This pushes the total number of voluntary disclosures up to 30,000 since 2009.
The programs gave U.S.taxpayers with undisclosed assets or income offshore a second chance to get compliant with the U.S. tax system, pay their fair share and avoid potential criminal charges.

One week filing extensions have been granted to taxpayers whose tax preparers have been affected by Hurricane Irene. The extensions granted by the IRS will give tax payers and their preparers some much needed tax relief after the disaster.
Returns normally due by September 15 will be granted extension until September 22, 2011. This relief is available to taxpayers regardless of their location but does not apply to any tax payment

I recently came across a post on The Global Resolution from the Thorn Law Group. The Global Resolution is the agreement the U.S. government and European banks are currently working on in a continued effort to put a stop to offshore tax evasion.
How will it work:
1) Any foreign bank under U.S. investigation will pay a fine to the government
2) Said bank will disclose U.S. client names to the government
