This February the IRS made a major announcement regarding their new effort aimed at helping taxpayers who are struggling. These new policies and programs will be put in place to 1) assist consumers in paying their back taxes and 2) avoididing tax liens.

While many consumers are still struggling to make ends meet in this current economy, the IRS recently announced changes to the lien process that is meant to give consumers “a break.”
According to the IRS press release, the lien process is going to undergo some changes, including:
Significantly increasing the dollar threshold when liens are generally issued, resulting in fewer tax liens.
Making it easier for taxpayers to obtain lien withdrawals after paying

Earlier this month we mentioned that the IRS have over $164.6 million in undelivered refund checks and want to deliver them to the rightful taxpayers. 111,893 taxpayers who are owed a refund check this year never received it because of simple mailing address errors. One of our clients, Brenda V., a taxpayer from West Covina, CA, owed 6 years’ worth of back taxes to the IRS – amounting to more than $38,000 before qualifying for a tax settlement of $582 through the IRS Offer in Compromise (OIC) program. The OIC program enables a taxpayer without the means to pay off IRS debt to permanently settle that debt for less than the amount owed.
