ALA. COUPLE FACE PRISON FOR EVASION
A husband and wife who reside in Remlap, Ala., have each pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion. As a part of the plea, Robert Woods, 58, admitted to evading federal income taxes for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. Shannon Woods, 42, admitted to evading federal income taxes for the years 2001 and 2002. To perpetuate the scheme from 2000 to 2002, the couple filed tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service stating that they had earned zero income and falsely stating that they were entitled to a refund of all withheld taxes. The couple also admitted to failing to file their federal income tax returns for the tax years 2003, 2004, and 2005.
“Filing falsely that you have ‘zero’ income makes zero sense,” said U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin.
The indictment stated Robert Woods was employed at automobile dealerships and Shannon Woods was employed by law firms as a legal secretary. They were married in 2001.
“While taxpayers have the right to contest their tax liabilities in the courts, taxpayers do not have the right to violate our tax laws,” said IRS agent Rebecca Sparkman.
They both face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
